Why are there excessive characters in my SMS message?

Often some non-standard UTF-8 characters may appear in your SMS causing the character length to increase. These characters are usually carried across when copying and pasting content from a rich text editor such as Microsoft Word or via email.

An example of some characters include modifier letter apostrophes (commonly used within Microsoft Word) rather than a standard apostrophe. These will look similar or the same in the UI, but the modifier letter apostrophe will count as more than one character.

To avoid these characters when copying and pasting content over, simply replace all characters manually using your keyboard. Or alternatively type out the text manually rather than copying and pasting.
