Why is my number of opens higher than my number of emails sent?
Great question! This actually happens more often than you'd think in email marketing. Hereโs why your number of opens can be higher than the number of emails sent:
1. Multiple Opens by the Same Recipient
A single person might open the same email multiple times โ on different devices (phone, desktop, tablet) or just revisiting it later.
Each of those opens gets counted individually, depending on your email platform.
For example, 500 emails sent, but each subscriber opens the email 3 times = 1500 total opens.
2. Forwarded Emails
If someone forwards your email and the new recipient opens it, it may still count as an "open" under the original recipient.
3. Previews or Security Filters
Email clients (like Outlook, Gmail, or Apple Mail) may preload the email in the background to generate a preview, which can trigger an open even if the user didnโt read it.
Some corporate or security software can even "scan" emails and accidentally fire the tracking pixel.
TL;DR Your "opens" count = total times the email was opened, not how many unique people opened it. So it's totally possible (and common) for opens to exceed sends.
