Populating list option via a manual file import
When you import subscribers via a manual file import, you can also populate or update a list option field for each subscriber. This is useful if you want to assign subscribers to specific segments or categories inside a list without using web forms or APIs.
Prerequisites
- You have a list option already created inside your Taguchi list.
- Your import file (CSV, TSV, or XLSX) contains a column with the list option values (e.g., "WA", "NSW", "QLD").
Step-by-step guide
- Prepare your import file so it includes a separate column for the list option value. Please refer to the sample table below:
| first_name | list_option | |
|---|---|---|
| john@example.com | John | VIC |
| jane@example.com | Jane | NSW |
| bob@example.com | Bob | VIC |
| sarah@example.com | Sarah | ACT |
| mike@example.com | Mike | QLD |
| emma@example.com | Emma | WA |
In this example, subscribers are being assigned list options based on their Australian state/territory (VIC, NSW, etc.).
Go to Subscribers → Import Subscribers and upload your file.
In the field mapping step of the file import dialog, map your file column to the
list_optionfield (not a custom field).
Complete the import. Taguchi will assign each subscriber the corresponding list option value.
What the updated list subscription options look like
After a successful import, you'll see the list option populated accordingly when you view a subscriber's profile:

The screenshot above shows an example of how the updated list subscription options appear after the import.
What happens after import?
- Each subscriber's list option will be updated or set according to your file.
- You can later use these list options for:
- Targeting campaigns (
list option is "WA") - Personalization
- Journey branching
- Targeting campaigns (
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| List option not updating | You mapped to a custom field instead of list_option. |
| Import fails validation | The value in your file doesn't match an existing list option name exactly (case‑sensitive). |
| Multiple list options? | A subscriber can only have one list option per list. This import overwrites, not appends. |
